As the global poker community continues to grapple with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Poker Tour (WPT) has announced further cancellations and postponements across its main tour and WPTDeepStacks series. With health and safety as the top priority, several popular stops have been pulled from the calendar as countries around the world face a surge in coronavirus cases.
Events originally scheduled for May — including the WPT Venetian, WPT Barcelona, and the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown — were among the first to be postponed. The WPTDeepStacks circuit also followed suit, canceling WPTDS Vietnam and WPTDS Amsterdam, while postponing stops in Maryland, Thunder Valley, and the European Championship in Deauville, France.
WPT officials are closely monitoring the evolving situation and will continue to assess the feasibility of future events in the coming weeks.
“We understand how important these tournaments are to players around the world,” said a WPT representative. “However, the safety of our community comes first. We look forward to returning stronger when conditions allow.”
The poker world remains hopeful for a safe return to live action later in the year, but for now, caution continues to dictate the path forward.
