In a move that had become increasingly inevitable, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) has officially announced the postponement of its 51st annual tournament series due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The world’s largest and most prestigious live poker event, originally scheduled for the summer in Las Vegas, will now be rescheduled to a later date, most likely in the fall.

This marks the first time since its inception in 1970 that the WSOP has had to significantly alter its schedule. However, organizers have reassured fans and players that the series is not canceled, just delayed, and plans are already in motion to adapt the experience to the current reality.

“We are committed to running the World Series of Poker this year but need additional time to proceed on our traditional scale while prioritizing guest and staff well-being,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart.

Online WSOP Events to Fill the Gap

To keep the spirit of the series alive during the summer months, the WSOP plans to roll out an expanded slate of online bracelet events on WSOP.com and through its international partners. This move will allow players to compete for official WSOP titles and bracelets from the safety and comfort of their homes.

Details about the online series are expected to be released soon, giving poker enthusiasts around the world an opportunity to chase WSOP glory despite the global shutdown.

Schedule Changes and Main Event Confirmation

While the official live tournament schedule will be revised, WSOP organizers have confirmed that the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Main Event, widely regarded as poker’s world championship, will still be part of the rescheduled series.

The original 2020 schedule included a record 101 gold bracelet events, though some adjustments are expected based on how the pandemic unfolds over the coming months.

Upcoming Live Events Still on the Calendar

As of now, the next major live WSOP event is the WSOP Circuit Global Casino Championship, scheduled for August 11–13 at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina. Whether this event will go ahead as planned depends on public health guidelines closer to the date.
