Nevada Gaming Board Outlines New Safety Guidelines for Poker Rooms Ahead of Potential Reopening

As Nevada edges closer to reopening parts of its economy, the Nevada Gaming Control Board has released a set of procedures aimed at safely restarting casino and poker room operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This announcement follows Governor Steve Sisolak’s statement that Phase One of the state’s reopening plan will begin this Saturday, allowing businesses such as restaurants and salons to resume operations at 50% capacity. While casinos are not included in this first wave, the Gaming Control Board is clearly preparing for an eventual green light—possibly by Memorial Day Weekend.

New Poker Room Rules: A Shift to Short-Handed Play

Under the proposed guidelines, poker rooms will be limited to just four players per table. This shift to short-handed play is expected to dramatically alter the typical poker environment:

  • 🎲 Larger tournaments and big pots may become less frequent, potentially impacting poker room revenues.

  • 🃏 Casual players may enjoy a more relaxed, less crowded atmosphere.

  • 🧍 ↔ 🧍 Enforcing 6-foot distancing remains a challenge, particularly in bustling poker and table game areas.

In addition to poker-specific changes, other casino games will also operate under new restrictions:

  • Craps tables: Limited to six players

  • Roulette tables: Capped at four players

  • Blackjack tables: Only three players allowed

Looking Ahead

While a firm reopening date for casinos has not yet been confirmed, insiders speculate that the Gaming Control Board’s proactive approach signals a potential restart within weeks, depending on public health developments and compliance readiness.

With more than 440 gaming establishments across Nevada, the rollout of these procedures could mark a major turning point in the state’s economic recovery.
