Longtime BTC advocate applauds the conviction of crypto skeptics
Professional poker player and outspoken Bitcoin supporter Mike McDonald has once again shared his thoughts on the ongoing crypto debate, taking a nuanced jab at two of Bitcoin’s most persistent critics — Peter Schiff and Nouriel Roubini.
In a recent tweet, McDonald praised the two for their unwavering skepticism, despite years of being proven wrong by Bitcoin’s steady rise in adoption and value:
“On one hand I’ve got to pay a lot of respect to permabears like @PeterSchiff and @Nouriel. I respect the conviction to be able to tell people to stay away from something even after years of (thus far) being wrong.”
A History of Criticism
Both Schiff and Roubini are well known in the financial world for accurately predicting the 2008–2009 global financial crisis. However, their track record on cryptocurrencies is far less accurate. They were early to dismiss Bitcoin as a passing fad back in the early 2010s and have remained vocal critics ever since.
One notable example was when Roubini tweeted during a sharp BTC correction in April, noting, “While everyone was focused on Gold and Silver, #BITCOIN dropped another 40%, traded below $58.”
Schiff, meanwhile, has been calling Bitcoin a bubble since at least 2011, questioning whether it would ever gain mainstream acceptance.
McDonald’s Take
McDonald’s tweet wasn’t just about criticism — it was about social risk versus reward. He suggested that public figures denouncing Bitcoin might face less backlash than those who strongly endorse it. He added that skepticism toward Bitcoin is often a “safe social bet”, even if it’s been repeatedly disproven by market trends.
Even Elon Musk, another high-profile commentator, once said cryptocurrencies could eventually replace cash. Yet Musk himself revealed that he owns just 0.25 BTC, suggesting a cautious personal stake despite his public curiosity.
