WPT Online Series Success Fuels Launch of New WPT Online Championship Tournaments

The World Poker Tour (WPT) has officially made its mark in the online poker world, and following the stunning success of its debut WPT Online Series in May, it’s wasting no time in gearing up for the next big virtual showdown.

Online Poker Boom Continues

Throughout May, the WPT Online Series hosted 94 events over 29 days, smashing expectations with $52.9 million in total payouts — a huge leap from its original $35 million in guaranteed prize pools. What’s even more impressive is that just three tournaments were responsible for the lion’s share of the prize money, signaling massive demand and strong participation from both amateur grinders and high-stakes pros.

Riding the wave of that momentum, WPT is expanding its online footprint with two newly revealed flagship tournaments: the WPT Online Championship Main Event and the Mini Main Event.

Two New WPT Online Events Unveiled

The new WPT World Championship Main Event is a high-stakes online tournament with a $10,300 buy-in, offering players a deep-structured event and two chances to qualify through Day 1A and Day 1B. Players start with 100,000 chips, and blinds begin at 250/500 with a 50 ante, increasing every 30 minutes — a structure designed to provide plenty of play and reward skill.

For players looking for a more affordable shot at WPT glory, there’s the Mini Main Event, which mirrors the format of its big brother but features a $1,050 buy-in. Both events are set to attract top-tier players from the online and live poker scenes alike.

Accessible to All: Satellites and Rake-Free Entry Options

To level the playing field and encourage broader participation, the WPT’s online partner platform is offering a variety of satellites and step tournaments. These low buy-in qualifiers give players the chance to win their way into major events without paying full price — or rake.

A Bright Future for Virtual WPT Events

With the online poker market surging during the pandemic and into the post-lockdown era, WPT’s transition to the virtual felt looks like a long-term strategy rather than a temporary adaptation. If these early results are any indication, we can expect the WPT to become a powerhouse in the online tournament space, regularly delivering world-class events from the comfort of players’ homes.
