First-Hand Hands: Mateos vs. Wang vs. Phua – Triton Invitational I

★☆☆☆☆

(User Rating 1/5)

This hand unfolded during the recent Triton Poker Series Cash Game Invitational I, an elite seven-day event featuring high-stakes poker players such as Adrián Mateos, Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey, Rob Yong, and several other poker legends, including Ferdinand, Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates, and Paul Phua, the CEO of Triton Poker.

The game took place at Maestral Resort and Casino in Montenegro, with blinds of $2,000/$5,000 and a $5,000 big blind ante. The hand in focus saw Adrián Mateos, one of the game’s most successful players, pitted against Paul Phua and ST Wang.

In the accompanying video, Mateos provides an exclusive moment-by-moment breakdown of the hand, offering unique insight into his thought process during one of the highest-stakes cash games in his career.

The Biggest Cash Game Hand of His Career

Adrián Mateos, who ranks eighth on the all-time money list with over $50 million in tournament cashes, shared that this was one of the highest stakes cash games he had ever played. Despite the big numbers involved, he approached it similarly to how he would handle tournament play.

“I think it’s way more similar than people think, especially during this Triton game,” Mateos explains. “We play with an ante, so it’s really similar to tournaments. I approach the game similar to the earlier stages of tournaments.”

In cash games, he points out, players tend to be a bit looser preflop, which requires an adjustment in post-flop strategy. He notes that playing more aggressively post-flop can be profitable since opponents often have wider ranges and weaker hands.

A Game of Mistakes

Despite the immense size of the pot, Mateos never gets distracted by the money. His primary focus remains on the strategy and making the best decisions in the moment. He constantly reviews his hands after the game, trying to minimize his mistakes with each session.

“Poker is a game of mistakes,” says Mateos. “The people who make the least mistakes are the ones who are going to win. I just try to be a better player every day.”

A Career-High Run in 2024

2024 has been a stellar year for Mateos. He’s on a career-high run with two seven-figure wins at Triton High Roller events, a first, second, third, and fourth finish at the recent Cyprus Super High Roller Bowl, and a deep 317th place finish in the WSOP Main Event.

“I want to be on the top of the all-time money list eventually,” Mateos shares, acknowledging his competitive spirit. “I follow the rankings. I also want to win the GPI this year because I’m really competitive. Let’s see how the year plays out.”
