Don’t Bet on Any Live Poker Tournaments in 2020

Uncertainty looms as major events remain postponed or move online

Despite some signs of progress in the global fight against COVID-19, live poker tournaments are unlikely to make a comeback in 2020. Even as the curve begins to flatten and discussions around reopening begin, the reality is clear: the return of large-scale, in-person poker events is still a long way off.

Tournament organizers and casino operators remain cautiously optimistic about potential fall dates. However, the slow and cautious reopening of gambling venues — coupled with strict social distancing guidelines — could fundamentally change how live poker is played, making it impractical for tournaments to resume in the near future.

WSOP and WPT: On Hold or Online

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) has already postponed numerous events, with some being moved to online platforms. But this solution is far from perfect. Online events are only legally accessible in two U.S. states, leaving many players without a viable way to participate.

Meanwhile, the World Poker Tour (WPT) also finds itself in limbo. At least three WPT final tables are still pending, awaiting the green light to proceed — including high-profile events originally scheduled to play out at the HyperX Esports Arena at Luxor in Las Vegas.

WPT Executive Tour Director Matt Savage commented,

“For the three WPT final tables, MGM, Luxor, and HyperX Esports Arena are the partners that need to make the decision when we can resume, and the WPT will be ready whenever that will be.”

A Year Without Live Poker?

While there’s hope in the air, the consensus among industry insiders is clear: don’t expect a return to the live poker scene until 2021. For fans and players alike, it’s a tough pill to swallow — but safety, as always, comes first.
