Dan “Jungleman” Cates has always been one of poker’s most colorful characters, and he’s embracing full villain mode after losing a recent mini-match to Phil Galfond.
The two poker heavyweights clashed in a one-session challenge, with Jungleman falling short by nearly $95,000 across 750 hands of high-stakes PLO action. As part of their friendly wager, Cates had to post a public video praising Galfond — and while he technically honored the bet, he did it in the most Jungleman way possible.
From Props to Threats (and Back Again)
“You know what, Falcons?” Jungleman began, using a rather unexpected new nickname for Galfond. “I’m gonna rip your claws out, I’m gonna tear your talons off, I’m gonna destroy you, crush your spirit, I’m gonna show your carcass to the whole world!”
Safe to say, the man was not thrilled about the loss.
After the theatrical threats, Cates dialed it back for a moment to give Galfond some genuine props:
“In all seriousness, Falcons — Mr. Phil Galfond, I should say — is the better poker player because he outplayed me this round… He never tilts, he’s insanely competitive, and he’s the better man because he treats everyone with kindness, even when they don’t deserve it.”
Then, as expected, the villain arc returned:
“Next time, Mr. Falcons will have his match set out for him — I will have my revenge. Your days are numbered, Falcons! I am gonna f***** destroy you!!”*
A Preview of the Main Event
This showdown was only a preview of the official Galfond Challenge, where Jungleman will have another chance to prove himself in a full-length battle. If this performance was any indication, fans can expect the rematch to be packed with intensity — and maybe a few more wild monologues.
Whether he’s trash-talking, plotting revenge, or praising his opponent with unexpected sincerity, Jungleman remains one of the most entertaining personalities in the game. And if you’re wondering how serious he is about that “revenge” — well, with Jungleman, it’s always a bit of both.
