Hey gang!
If you’ve read the previous parts of this guide, you should be prepped, packed, and ready for action! Las Vegas is now your temporary home, with its famous entertainment and distractions. But, let’s be real — you’re here to play poker!
Getting Ready to Play
There are 100 WSOP tournament events this summer, and the city is buzzing with cash game action 24/7. Here’s what you need to know:
-
Cash Games:
Use Bravo Live or Poker Atlas to get on the cash game list before you arrive at the casino. Some places even let you call ahead. Avoid waiting around; do it in advance! -
Tournament Essentials:
For WSOP tournaments, don’t forget:-
Your player’s card
-
A valid ID
-
The dealer version of your tournament slip
Pro Tip: Always review the structure sheet and don’t hesitate to ask the dealer any questions. It’s much better to clarify things than to make a mistake!
-
-
Photo It!
Take a photo of your table number and chip stack before going on break. If you’re moved to a new table, it’s easy to forget the details. You don’t want to miss a hand searching for your table after the break.Pro Tip: If you’ve had a drink or two, make sure you can still find your way back to your table — it’s easy to lose track!
You Won! Now What?
Congratulations! You cashed in a bracelet event — that’s no small feat. Or maybe you made it to day 2 of a multi-day event — soak it all in, you’ve earned it!
-
Memorialize the Moment:
Take a selfie, capture a panoramic video, and keep the pens and yellow slips you get at registration. These little tokens will be memories to cherish. -
Getting Paid:
After you finish the tournament, head to the payment cage. You’ll have several options:-
Wire Transfer
-
Check
-
Cash
For larger amounts, you might want a mix — some cash, some in a check or wire transfer.
-
Tax Considerations
If you’ve earned $5,000 or more, you’ll need to account for taxes:
-
Americans will receive a tax form to file with their annual return.
-
Europeans: Many countries have treaties with the USA to let you keep your full winnings, but it’s important to check.
-
Canadians: The IRS withholds 25%-30%, but you may be able to reclaim some of it when you file your taxes.
If you’ve sold action, don’t forget to account for the tax implications when you pay out your investors.
The Tipping Point
Tipping is a gray area in poker, and opinions vary widely. Many tournaments now include a gratuity fee, but if they don’t, here are some guidelines:
-
1%-2% of your winnings is common for tips at the cage.
-
Some players prefer to tip dealers personally after the event.
Do what feels right for you!
What NOT to Do
To make the most of your time at the WSOP, avoid these mistakes:
-
Don’t Carry Too Much Cash:
While the Strip is generally safe, carrying too much cash increases the risk if you lose your bag or get pickpocketed. -
Don’t Get Too Drunk:
Poker requires sharp decision-making. A drink or two is fine, but don’t overdo it — you need your A-game! -
Don’t Stay Up All Night:
Get enough sleep. The next day’s tournament starts fast, and you need to be at your best. -
Don’t Jaywalk:
Las Vegas police are strict about jaywalking, and drivers can be aggressive. Stick to the crosswalks. -
Don’t Gamble:
You’re here to play poker. Stay away from the slots and table games; focus on your main goal — winning!
Now, you’re all set to take on the 2025 WSOP! Go out there and win a bracelet!
